Ansted Elementary School
Project Summary
Ansted, WV is located along Route 60 near the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve with a population of ~1,300. Despite its close proximity to the National Park it is closer to Hawks Nest State Park. Hawks Nest is a 270-acre recreational area with activities such as boating, biking, fishing, historical sites, and a 30 room lodge for visitors. These parks however, only bring economic impact via visitors and not new residents. Unfortunately, in 2021 the Fayette County School Board voted to close Ansted Elementary School. Mayor Stephen Pridemore of Ansted has begun progessive and adaptable planning to revitalize the soon-to-be closed school into a 15-20 tenant apartment building. From assistance with the West Virginia Brownfield Assistance Center and the WV Department of Environmental Protection, Mayor Pridemore is pursuing grant funding to help recover this significant community loss. This proposal is a conceptual design plan for the to be reconverted elementary school showing proof of concept and intention to redevelop.
