Krodel Park Expansion
Project Summary
The City of Point Pleasant, WV is aiming to expand their Krodel Park in both size and amenities. Located within Mason County, WV, bordering Ohio, the park is currently sitting at approximately 50 acres and is a recreation hub for the City with a lake and rental hut for water recreation, a walking trail, and a RV/Camper campground. The City acquired a neighboring parcel with 17.5 deeded acres to expand Krodel Park with tent camping opportunities, a viable floodplain ecosystem, and other recreation amenities. This design proposal package was prepared to assist the City with the reuse planning of the site.
Historically, the expansion parcel was home to a landfill from the early 1960s into the 1970s. However, today, remnants of the dumped trash are seen in the Udorthents soil composition, a human-altered soil, which covers most if not all of the site. Due to the park being within the 100-year floodplain, the expansion parcel’s water table rises seasonally cause in vernal pooling on site. However, due to the land use history and soil composition as the water infiltrates the ground, contaminants leech into the groundwater and into the rivers.
